June 3, 2025 update: At Haystack Mountain Off-Highway Vehicle Area, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will increase fees starting July 1, 2025. The fee adjustments aim to address the costs associated with maintaining and improving facilities and infrastructure necessary to support a growing number of visitors. For fee information please see this press release. Perched on the rugged breaks overlooking the Pecos River, Haystack Mountain Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Area offers 1,920 acres of trails to ride. From novices to experts, on bare rock and sandy washes, OHV enthusiasts can find terrain to fit their skill level. The terrain is extremely rugged, including such varied features as deep gullies with difficult hill climbs in and out of a scenic sandstone escarpment. Purchase activity passesThe OHV area is designed for OHVs no wider than 50 inches, and it is ideal for motorcycles. Nationally sanctioned "Trials" events are held at the area each year. Haystack Mountain's parking lot is large enough for easy loading/unloading and can be used as a staging area for large events. The single track trails are ideal for mountain biking as well.

Northeast from Roswell on US-70, about 28 miles — roughly half an hour. The route passes Acme, which is a name on the map rather than a town. Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge sits between Roswell and the area.

State residents
New Mexico residents: your OHV must be registered with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and display the registration decal.
Out-of-state riders
Out-of-state riders: a New Mexico non-resident permit is required before riding on ANY public land in New Mexico — UNLESS you carry proof of a valid OHV registration from your home state, which New Mexico accepts. If you need one: $48 for a 2-year permit or $18 for 90 days.
