Full agency description
Fossil Creek sits on the Owyhee Front, the OHV country southwest of Boise that riders from the Treasure Valley have used for generations. It is a trailhead into hundreds of miles of roads, moderate-to-difficult trails and sand washes across steep, rocky ground — single-track for dirt bikes, wider two-tracks for ATVs and side-by-sides. It is free to ride. What catches people out is that this is designated-route country, not open desert: under the Murphy Travel Management Plan you stay on the routes, and the only cross-country riding anywhere nearby is a 200-acre patch at Hemingway Butte.

Fossil Creek Trailhead — Highway 78Entrance
From Interstate 84 take EXIT 33 to Highway 55. Follow Highway 55 south for 18 miles to Marsing, Idaho. In Marsing turn LEFT onto Highway 78 and continue about 40 miles to the Fossil Creek Trailhead.
Designated routes only — cross-country travel is prohibited under the Murphy Travel Management Plan
The one exception is a 200-acre cross-country area immediately adjacent to the Hemingway Butte OHV Trailhead

Cross-country travel is only allowed in the 200 acre area immediate adjacent to the Hemingway Butte OHV Trailhead. Otherwise, please do not travel cross-country in this area. The Murphy Travel Management Plan has established areas where OHV is limited to designated routes.

📋 IDAHO — NON-RESIDENT STICKER IS REQUIRED AND THERE IS NO RECIPROCITY. Idaho ended reciprocity in 2020, so your home-state sticker does NOT count. Buy the Idaho non-resident OHV sticker before you ride.
🪖 IDAHO — DOT-approved helmet required for riders under 18.
🔧 IDAHO — a muffler and a Forest Service approved spark arrester are required.
